Lucas, op.cit., pp. 164-65: "In saying that a conscious being knows something, we are saying not only that he knows it, but he knows that he knows it, and that he knows that he knows that he knows it, and so on, as long as we care to pose the question: there is an infinity here, but it is not an infinite regress, for it is the question that peter out rather than the answers. The paradoxes of the consciousness arise because a conscious being can be aware of itself, as well as other things, and yet cannot really be construed as being divisible into parts."
