Vide Chrisippus (extant about 2300 years ago) quoted by J.R. Lucas, The Freedom of the Will, p.55: "Everything that happens is followed by something else which depends on it by causal necessity. Likewise, everything that happens is preceded by something with which it is causally connected. The universe will be disrupted and disintegrate into pieces and cease to be a unity functioning as a single system, if any uncaused movement is introduced into it." All the long past of the individual and even of the race has prepared the background for that psychological moment of action. All the racial memories, influences of heredity and environment and training, thoughts and dreams and actions in their curious and tremendous mix-up, inevitably drive to that new action, which again becomes another factor influencing the future. Influencing the future, partly determining it, possibly even largely determining it, and yet surely, it is not all determinism."
